His cremation will take place with full state honours in PUnjab on Thursday.

Ludhiana: Ishmeet Singh, the winner of television talent show, died due to drowning, a post-mortem report released in his hometown Ludhiana concluded.

Ishmeet died in Maldives on Wednesday night and his body was flown to Ludhiana where the cremation will take place with full state honours on Thursday.

Some members of the 19-year-old's family, while speaking to reporters, raised suspicions of foul play and demanded a probe into the circumstances leading to his death.

“We suspect Ishmeet's presence in Maldives was not about just another show but it could be that he was a part of a conspiracy that finally led to his death,” says Ishmeet's uncle, Charan Kamal.

Ishmeet's post-mortem was not done in the Maldives because the island doesn't have the facilities. But doctors in Patiala have examined the body.

“The cause of death in this case, in our opinion is due to asphyxia caused by drowning. But any other reason, if any, will be declared after the chemical reports from the government medical college, Patiala,” says SMO, Civil Medical Hospital, Ludhiana, Dr Harjinder Singh.

The winner of the television reality show Voice of India 2007 had gone to the Maldives for a stage show, drowned in the swimming pool of a hotel.

Ishmeet’s father Gurprinder Singh Sodhi accompanied the body to his native place in a chartered aircraft arranged by the Punjab government.

A large number of people, including children, carrying candles and placards, lined along the 15-km route from Halwara airport, on the outskirts, to Ludhiana.

Policemen were deployed all along the route.
