Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, who has been in hospital for over two months now, suffered cardiac arrest on Sunday night, prompting authorities to keep paramilitary forces on standby in and around the southern state.
Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa breathed her last at 11:30pm on Monday, Apollo Hospitals, where the AIADMK supremo had been admitted for over two months, confirmed.
Amma, as Jayalalithaa was fondly called by supporters, passed away more than 24 hours after suffering a cardiac arrest.
AIADMK cadre and supporters who had been gathered outside the hospital since Sunday night were inconsolable.
Security has been ramped up across the state and paramilitary forces were on standby.
