On Monday, in an unfortunate incident, at least nine people died and 60 people were left injured after a speeding goods train collided with the stationary Sealdah-bound Kanchenjunga Express near Rangapani station, just before the New Jalpaiguri station in West Bengal. Three compartments of the express train derailed because of the impact of the collision from the rear end of the locomotive.
As per reports, rescue operations are going on and the injured ones are being shifted to nearby hospitals. Meanwhile, Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee and Union Minister of Railways of India, Ashwini Vaishnaw reached the site as well. Amid this, Jalpaiguri station’s counter stopped issuing train tickets which led to a man not being able to attend his father’s last rites.
The tragic accident resulted in many left injured and dead including the driver of the freight train. The injured have been admitted to North Bengal Medical College. The incident affected operations at Jalpaiguri station. This has resulted in a halt in ticket issuance and is further causing inconvenience for travellers. Due to this, a young man could not reach his home on time to bid a final adieu to his father. Reportedly, due to the non-issuance of tickets, he was turned away from the counter and could not be part of the last rites of his father.
Meanwhile, there are reports that the accident might lead to a disruption in rail connectivity with North East India. At the same time, North Bengal has been witnessing severe weather conditions. Continuous heavy rains have been causing delays in the rescue operations. Disaster response teams are also working hard to tackle the situation efficiently.
As per reports, it is still difficult to gauge the extent of the damage the collision has caused. Officials from Phansidewa also reached the spot and with the help of residents, they are carrying out the rescue operations actively.
