Chakkuli aka Chakli or Murukku is one of the most enjoyed and loved snacks in the country. While different regions call it by different names, the love for the crispy snack remains the same. You can pair it with a cup of hot beverage. It can be prepared at home by following simple and easy recipes. It can be a hit food item during festivals like Krishna Janmashtami. Did you know there is a Chakkuli eating competition as well? Recently, a Chakkuli eating competition was held at Hegdekatta village in Sirsi located in Uttar Kannada, Karnataka. It was part of the Chakkuli Kambala festival, where this crispy snack was eaten and men and women participated to compete fiercely with each other at the event. As per reports, every participant was given five chakkulis.

Both men and women competed against each other in this unique competition. They were seen grabbing a bottle of water to moisten the crunchy texture of the snack so that they could eat and swallow it quickly. The competition drew attention and entertained the audience. They cheered and clapped to encourage the contestants as well.

Finally, it was a man named Nikhil Hegde who secured the first place, followed by Ram Marathi in the second place and Sannidhi Bhat in the third place. The competition brought a different kind of zeal among the youth with even elders participating in the event.

Generally, murukku or chakkuli is made using rice flour, maida, salt, butter, turmeric, red chilli powder, sesame, hing, salt, water and oil. The flours are mixed along with salt, spices and sesame seeds. After combining the ingredients, butter is added and then water to knead it into a soft and smooth dough. You can add the dough to the chakli maker or to a piping bag. On a wet cloth or on butter paper make spiral shapes and make sure to seal the ends so that it does not break while deep frying. Take one chakkuli at a time and deep fry it in the oil on medium flame till it turns crispy from both sides.
