Chennai may have been spared from heavy showers on Thursday but the city is far from being out of danger. Large parts of the city continue to be inundated with thousands stuck in their homes without any food, water or electricity.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Chennai on Thursday to take stock of the damage and offered Rs 1000 crore as assistance.
Commercial carriers Air India, Indigo, Spicejet and Truejet will be operating 6 flights from Arakkonam naval base airport. Railways have arranged shuttle service from Chennai beach to Arakkonam airbase to facilitate the flying out.
Rescue operations are in full swing in the state with the Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Air Force and National Disaster Response Force at work. Several batches of stranded passengers have been taken to the Begumpet Airport in Hyderabad from Chennai. IAF choppers have been dropping-off food and medicines to people who are now practically living on their terraces as their homes are flooded. A train service from Chennai beach to Tambaram air base is also operational.
