Stating that the main objective of “love jihad” is to establish dominance over India and it cannot be taken lightly, a fast-track court in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly sentenced a Muslim youth, 25, to “jail for entire life” for illegal conversion.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Ravi Kumar Diwakar’s 42-page order stated: “In love jihad, Muslim men systematically target Hindu women for conversion to Islam through marriage and Muslim men marry Hindu women fraudulently by pretending to love them in order to convert them. The main objective of love jihad is to establish dominance over India under demographic war and international conspiracy by some anarchist elements of a particular religion.”
The judge had also called for videographic survey of Varanasi’s Gyanvapi mosque and the sealing of the wuzukhana area in 2022. The woman, 22, had filed a complaint in May 2023, alleging accused Mohd Aalim Ahmad had initially introduced himself as Anand Kumar when they met at a coaching class in Bareilly in 2022 and got married in a temple on March 13, 2022. The woman alleged she got to know his real identity later. Aalim was charged with several crimes, including rape, criminal intimidation, and voluntarily causing hurt. His father, too, was charged with criminal intimidation and sentenced to two years in jail.
The woman, who was produced in court on September 19, after issuing a warrant, changed her statement, saying she had “registered the FIR after right-wing groups pressured her parents”. The court, however, refused to accept her statement, saying it was under the influence of the accused.
“Illegal conversions through love jihad are done to fulfill some other big purpose. If the Indian government does not stop illegal conversions through love jihad in time, then the country may have to face serious consequences in the future,” it said.
“The crime of illegal conversion of Hindu girls by trapping them in love through love jihad is being carried out on a large scale by a rival gang i.e. syndicate, by brainwashing the weaker sections of non-Muslims, Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and OBC communities, women and children, by speaking ill of their religion, by making derogatory comments about the gods and goddesses, by applying psychological pressure and by luring them with various types of temptations like marriage, job etc., so that conditions like Pakistan and Bangladesh can be created in India too. The issue of illegal conversion cannot be taken lightly. Illegal conversion is a big threat to the unity, integrity and sovereignty of the country,” the order said.
“The process of ‘love jihad’ involves significant financial resources, and in this case, it is likely that foreign funding is involved,” the court held.
