'Lucky' wins the Golden Bherunda award at BIFF
The last day of the 4th Bengaluru International Film Festival was marked with the award ceremony.

Bangalore: The last day of the 4th Bengaluru International Film Festival (BIFFES-2011), which offered Bangaloreans a feast with the screening of an array of films from across the world, was marked with the award ceremony.

At a press conference held here on Thursday, T S Nagabharana, festival director, along with artistic director H N Narahari Rao, brand ambassador and actor Tara and members of the festival jury announced Golden Bherunda Awards to eight out of the 14 films that were chosen in the competition category.

South African film 'Lucky', with B Jayshree in the lead and which was the opening film of the festival, won the Golden Bherunda carrying a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh.

"Lucky was screened after the inauguration of the festival," said Nagabharana.

"We had to choose this film for the award as it talks of racism against Indians in South Africa. Indians helped Africans during the Apartheid regime and now they are the ones facing harassment. The relationship between an African boy and an Indian woman is what makes the film special," said P H Vishwanath of the international jury.

Silver Bherunda carrying Rs 5 lakh was awarded to German director Feo Aladag for his film 'When We Leave'.

The Netpac jury announced the Netpac Award from the Asian cinema section to Sri Lankan film 'Flying Fish', directed by Sanjeewa Pushpa Kumara. The prize includes a citation and a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh.

In the Kannada cinema section, film society jury announced the Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy Award to 'Gandhi Smiles', directed by Krish Joshi, and 'Puttakkana Highway' by B Suresha. The Suchitra Sanman Award, carrying Rs 2 lakh and a citation, was given to Bengali film 'Nobel Chor' by Suman Ghosh.
