Madhya Pradesh polls: Violence mars record 70 per cent voting; one dead
More than for 4 crore 65 lakh voters were given the right to exercise their franchise to nominate a total of 2,583 in the 230-member Assembly.

Polling for the election of a new Madhya Pradesh assembly came to an end at 5 pm on Monday with 70 per cent voter turnout, an official said.

Polling had begun at 8 am for 227 seats of the 230-member assembly, while it began an hour earlier in three constituencies in Balaghat district, a Maoist hub, and ended there at 3 pm.

The general populace of 4,64,57,724 voters in Madhya Pradesh were expected to exercise their franchise to elect representatives to a 230-member Assembly of the state. Of them around 50 lakh youngsters were to exercise their right to vote for the first time.

In morning two Congress workers were arrested with 191 bottles of liquor before the polling actually commenced.

There was also a fault detected in ECM number 127 in Betul. Both Congress and BJP Chief Ministerial candidate reached the polling booth in the morning.

I have maintained my calm. We are sure to win because of the development works carried out by us, said Shivraj Singh Chauhan.

On the other hand Congress leader Kamal Nath Singh also seemed optimistic and said that Congress will cross the magic figure of 116 this time.

Even after the special measures taken to ensure smooth and trouble-free election, some unidentified miscreants fired at polling booth number 108 at Hirapur Village in Bhind.

And then a Dalit was beaten up and stopped by miscreants from casting vote at Grampura Village before police could reach the spot.

A Congress worker also alleged fake voting in Jhabua. And then a booth level officer was suspended at Ranapur.

Also one Congress worker dies in firing in Kargaon and four others were injured.
