Ahmedabad: A domestic passenger was arrested today at the airport here for allegedly trying to smuggle gold items, some of them hidden inside his body, worth around Rs 49 lakh, customs officials said.
The accused, Avinash Kumar, a resident of Jalandhar in Punjab, was intercepted at the city airport on suspicion. "On checking, he was found to be carrying gold bars, chains and 'kada' (bangles) weighing around 1,756 grams and valued at Rs 48,57,676," he said, adding, Kumar was coming from Mumbai by an Air India flight.
To hoodwink customs officials, the passenger had concealed the gold bars in his rectum, he said. Further investigation in the case was on, the official added.
