BELGAUM: Senior Marathi journalist Ashok Yalgi, who was awarded with the 'Dr VK Gokak Award', constituted by Maharashtra Sahitya Parishad (MSP), on Sunday returned the award following criticism from Maharashtrains.
Ashok Yalgi met MSP president Mirasdar in Belgaum and returned the award, which he had received at a function in Pune last week. The contention of the Maharashtrians was that it was the Gokak report that recommended making Kannada compulsory in border area schools.

Critics of the journalists recalled that Maharashtrians had launched a massive agitation on June 1, 1986, in border areas in which nine Marathi people were killed in a police firing.
