MEA denies receiving letter on Salem
The External Affairs Ministry on Wednesday said it had received no letter from Portuguese government on Salem.

New Delhi: The External Affairs Ministry on Wednesday said it had received no letter from Portuguese government with regard to allegations of torture of underworld don Abu Salem in police custody in India.

"I have no confirmation that anything official has been received in the MEA (from Portugal)," External Affairs Ministry spokesman Navtej Sarna told reporters when referred to media reports.

He said neither the MEA nor the Indian Embassy in Portugal had received any communication from the Portuguese government with regard to the allegations.

Media reports said on Tuesday that the Portuguese government had sent a letter to the MEA alleging that Salem had been tortured in police custody which violated bilateral extradition treaty.

The reports said Portugal had attached media clippings with the letter and sought MEA's comments.

Salem, along with his girl friend Monica Bedi, was arrested in Lisbon on September 18, 2002.

And their extradition was ensured only after New Delhi gave an assurance that the duo, if convicted, would not be given capital punishment.

The Lisbon authorities had also been assured by CBI that there would be no custodial torture of Salem or Monica.

Salem had been extradited to India to stand trial in eight cases which included the Mumbai serial blasts, two cases of forgery of passports in Lucknow, three cases of extortion in Delhi and two murder cases in Mumbai which included murder of Ajit Dewani, secretary of actress Manisha Koirala.
