Chinmayi, who hails from Kundara in the Kollam district of Kerala, has a profound love and passion for both soil and agriculture. Inspired and supported by her parents, Pradeep and B. Priya, who were drawn to traditional farming at their ancestral agricultural home in Sankaramangalam, Kanchikode, she has transformed herself into a young farmer. Chinmayi, starting from a young age, began working alongside her father in agricultural fields and gardens, showing interest in every agricultural activity. Her family cultivates a variety of crops including beetroot, green chillies, brinjal, pumpkin and pavakka.
Growing up with a strong affection for farming, Chinmayi initiated agricultural activities with her father on their land and in their fields. Her father, Pradeep, and the entire family have a lineage deeply rooted in agriculture. Due to health concerns in 2019, Chinmayi, being confined to home, became more involved in farming. Apart from agriculture, they also engage in raising goats.
Under her father’s leadership, Chinmayi took on responsibilities such as using biological pest control methods and preserving various crops. This agricultural work is central to all of their activities, starting from seeding and growth to harvesting and marketing. In particular, her interest in cultivating and selling vegetables locally continues to grow. This year, she has expanded her efforts with the cultivation of the ‘Bindi Number-10′ variety of ladies’ finger, yielding a significant output of 40 kg from 2000 plants within 45 days.
Aside from vegetable cultivation, they also raise cattle. Chinmayi received the Young Farmer Award in 2022 for her farming activities. The ‘Bio Pest Management for Fruit Production’ project was another award won by her at the sub-district science fair. These achievements reflect Chinmayi’s commitment and dedication to agriculture. Chinmayi says that farming is not just a means of livelihood but a way of life for her, driven by her love for the land and farming practices.
