For better preparedness to deal with natural calamities in future, the IMD is gearing up to install a wide range of facilities in the hill state to strengthen its weather forecasting system.

The Indian Meteorological Department is preparing to install three doplar radars, 75 rain gauge metres, five micro rain radars, 4 compact radars, 75 weather stations besides introducing a helicopter support weather system in Uttarakhand to improve the weather warning system and make precise forecasts, IMD Managing Director LS Rathore said at a meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Subhash Kumar in Dehradun on Thursday.

The Centre has already given its nod to a project worth Rs 116 crore for installing a state-of-the-art automatic weather station and radar in the state, the chief secretary said and asked IMD officials present at the meeting to identify a suitable land for the purpose.

Ever since a natural calamity of catastrophic proportions hit the state in June last year, Uttarakhand government has been requesting the Centre to take effective steps to tone up the weather warning system in the state.
