Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has announced a reward of Rs one lakh each for the members of the Indian hockey team, which won the Asian Champions Trophy in China recently.
Chouhan made the announcement from China where he is taking part in the ongoing World Economic Forum meet, sources said.
When Chouhan was apprised about the paltry monetary offer of Rs 25,000 from Hockey India which the players had refused, he immediately announced the award for each member of the squad.
The hockey team, which won the Asian Champions Trophy after beating arch-rivals Pakistan in the final on Sunday, rejected HI's Rs 25,000 cash reward on Wednesday, saying the paltry amount was not a proper recognition of their achievement.
However, hours after the Indian players rejected the offer, cash rewards trickled in for them, with the Sports Ministry announcing Rs 1.5 lakh each and the Punjab government pitching in with Rs 25 lakh for the team.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar handed a cheque of Rs one lakh to hockey player Yuvraj Walmiki on Thursday.
The 21-year-old forward met Pawar at the Mantralaya in the morning.
Walmiki scored in the penalty shootout in the final of the Asian Champions Trophy, which India went on to win.
The NCP leader also took note of the disconnected electricity at Walmiki's residence and asked BEST General Manager Omprakash Gupta to immediately restore the supply.
The state government is also planning to allot Walmiki a flat in the city, sources said.####
