Bhopal: Though presently confronting an acute electricity crisis, Madhya Pradesh would not only attain self-sufficiency but also regain its reputation as a power-surplus state by 2007.
Chief Secretary Rakesh Sahani, who is also State Electricity Board Chairman, said on Friday that besides consumers receiving power as per their requirement, industries would receive day-long power and the agriculture sector would get 8-16 hours supply by 2007-08.
"Work on the 520-MW Maheshwar project, 500-MW Birsinghpur, 425-MW Banganga, 210-MW Amarkantak, 40-MW Manikheda and 15-MW Bargi project is progressing rapidly and would be completed by next year," he claimed.
The government has decided to invite global tenders for setting up a 1,000-MW thermal power plant.
"The task of 100 per cent metering is underway. A transmission committee is being constituted, on experimental basis, so that power theft could be checked," he added.
Responding to a question, Sahani said the current peak-hour shortage was 20-22 per cent while it was 10-12 per cent at other times.
Consumption touched 6,000 MW during the 'rabi' season due to irrigation-linked demand.
Regarding transmission and distribution losses, the Chief Secretary said transmission loss was in the seven to nine per cent range, which was below permissible limits.
"However, officials were worried as reduction in technical and commercial losses was not as much as expected," he said adding that steps were being taken to reduce these losses.
