Mumbai: A police officer who went missing on Saturday was found trapped in a lift, which went out of service, for over 40 hours at his office building in south Mumbai. He was rushed to a nearby hospital in a weak and delirious state.

Inspector Suresh Sonawane (46), an officer with Mumbai Police's Missing Persons Bureau, was found in the lift on Monday when technicians opened it for repairs at his office building in Crawford Market area, police said. Sonawane disappeared at about 2:00 pm on Saturday and could neither be contacted by his family nor colleagues.

Subsequently, a missing person's complaint was registered the same evening. He did not even have a mobile phone as doctors had advised him not to carry it following his brain surgery sometime back, police said.

Till Monday morning, there were no leads to trace Sonawane. After being spotted in the lift, he was rushed to GT Hospital and MRA Marg police were called in. "Sonawane's health is weak now. We will record his statement after he recovers," Additional Police Commissioner Krishna Prakash said. He said enquiries have been initiated to check how the technicians failed to verify if anybody occupied the lift or not. After the enquiry, a case would be registered if required.
