In the wake of a large scale scam in Madurai involving the PRP Granites, three quarries owned by the company here were also brought under the scanner.
One quarry is located in Pudukombai in Namakkal taluk and two others in Periasolipalayam coming under the Paramathi-Velur taluk, an official said.
He noted that the PRP firm obtained lease for quarrying granites in Pudukombai for a period of 20 years from 2006 to 2026 and the company had stopped operations since 2009 because of the poor quality of stones available there. Only 3.309 cubic meter of granites were carved out from the quarry.
However, the other two quarries in Periasolipalayam have yielded a total of 5,212.613 cubic meter granites, with an approximate value of Rs 1.8 crore, the official said. Periasolipalayam quarries were leased out to the PRP Granites and PRP Exports since 2005 for 20 years. Earlier, these two quarries were run by a former PMK MLA Dr Nedunchelian.
Officials of the Department of Mines sent a report on these three quarries to the government. “Following the Madurai incident, we were asked to submit a report on the existing granite quarries in the district. We sent the report on August 17,” Assistant Director of Mines N Ramesh informed.
