Nine arrested for assaulting the Tanzanian woman in Bengaluru
Initial reports said the woman was assaulted, stripped and paraded naked by a mob in the outskirts of the city on Sunday, but the Karnataka government denied she was paraded naked.

Four more people have been arrested for assaulting the Tanzanian woman in Bengaluru taking the total number of arrests to 9 so far. One constable has also been suspended over the incident.

Initial reports said the woman was assaulted, stripped and paraded naked by a mob in the outskirts of the city on Sunday, but the Karnataka government denied she was paraded naked.

Speaking to CNN-IBN, the 21-year-old student said that police officers on the spot did nothing to stop the attack. "There were policemen around before the attacks began, but once they started beating us I do not know where they went," she said.

She said there were a large number of people who had gathered at the spot and that they attacked her friends as well. Five people have been arrested so far in the case.

Terming the incident as "isolated", MEA Spokesperson Vikas Swarup said it was result of a "chain reaction" following a road accident in which a woman was killed. He said the incident should not be "generalised".

Asked about the remarks of Tanzanian High Commissioner that it was a "racist" attack, Swarup said there was initially a road accident following which there was a "chain reaction" leading to this "shameful and regrettable" incident.

"We have assured our African friends that necessary legal action will be taken and stringent punishment will be given to those involved in the attack and that we will take all steps to ensure safety and security of African students in India," the Spokesperson added while noting that there were about 5,000 African students in the country.
