CHENNAI: After years of presenting just proposals for reducing traffic congestion, Chennai Corporation has finally awarded contracts to two private players for developing multi-level vehicle parking facilities at Broadway and Greams Road.“Though the civic body had started debating the issue of constructing multi-level vehicle parking facilities in 1996, it has fructified only last year, when the Corporation awarded contracts to two players to set up the facility at Broadway and Wallace Garden near Greams Road,” Saidai P Ravi, Opposition Floor Leader in the house told City Express.Recalling the debates for such facilities that happened in the House in the last 15 years, Ravi said, “Given the increasing parking woes at the commercial places, time to time, Councillors debated for such a facility and most of the time, it never moved beyond the proposal level mainly due to either opposition from locals or due to poor planning.”Though the present state government had announced its intention to construct such a facility at Panagal Park recently, we are hearing that local environmental groups have moved court to stall it, Ravi added. While both the facilities would be fully automatic, Greams Road project will have a facility with space for 240 equivalent car spaces (ECS), space for 200 cars and 250 two-wheelers. At the Broadway project, where the ground floor of the parking facility would be used for the bus stand, it will be 610 ECS, space for 500 cars and 690 two-wheelers. Both the projects are likely to be completed in another 48 months.
