In a decisive move against insurgency in Upper Assam, the Indian Army apprehended a cadre of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak Muivah (NSCN-IM) in a joint operation with the Assam Police. The operation, which took place at Inthem Ghat in the Pengree area of Tinsukia district, resulted in the recovery of a significant cache of arms and ammunition intended for insurgent activities.

Acting on precise intelligence inputs about the presence of insurgents in the region, a joint team of the Indian Army and Assam Police launched a coordinated search operation in the early hours of September 12. After a meticulous combing of the area, the security forces successfully apprehended the NSCN (IM) cadre. Among the items recovered were two pistols, three high-explosive grenades, and a substantial quantity of live ammunition, all of which are believed to have been meant for carrying out subversive activities.

The arrest is seen as a major breakthrough in efforts to curb insurgent activity in the Upper Assam region, which has been a hotbed for militant operations. The captured insurgent and the recovered items were handed over to Assam Police for further questioning and legal proceedings. Police officials are expected to probe deeper into the insurgent’s affiliations, motives and potential networks operating in the region.

The success of this operation is part of a larger strategy undertaken by security forces to ensure lasting peace and stability in Assam and the Northeast. The collaboration between the Indian Army and Assam Police underscores the enhanced coordination between different security agencies in tackling insurgency. Officials from both agencies commended the smooth execution of the operation, which highlights the relentless efforts by the armed forces and law enforcement agencies to disrupt insurgent groups’ activities in the region.

Commenting on the operation, a senior Army official said, “This successful operation reflects the continued vigilance of our forces. We remain committed to maintaining peace and preventing insurgent elements from destabilising the region. The recovery of these arms and ammunition is a significant step towards dismantling the militant networks that threaten security.”

This latest operation comes amid ongoing efforts to neutralise insurgent activities and maintain law and order across the Northeastern states. Security forces have intensified their operations in recent months, particularly in sensitive areas known for insurgent presence, to deter future attacks and maintain stability in the region.
