Just when you walk into a hotel expecting to miss non-vegetarian for a meal, there it is. At Quality Inn Sabari, among vats of one’s favourite Onam delicacies – think Palakkdan Mattu Chorru (stout grains of boiled rice) and avial, are also Meen Varuthathu (fish fry) and Attirachi Istoo, a delicately-flavoured melt-in-the-mouth chicken gravy. It was an Onam walk of heaven for non-vegetarians who otherwise have to give up these Keralite fantasies on this one day.
Walking around the buffet, foodies are spoilt for choice. Thank goodness the Appam counter isn’t open just yet or knowing when to stop might have been harder than expected.
We kick off the meal with a creamy Kozhi Irachi Puzhukku soup. It’s light on the stomach with bite-size pieces of chicken that warm you up for the next course. The Idiappam and Kumbalanga Pulisseri go together perfectly, a delicious combination of moor curry and pumpkin, rice lovers would enjoy this one just as much. Then there are the classic must haves — Uli Sambar, Kadala Curry and the Avial, prepared just right. Definitely a highlight was the Manga Chertha Meen Curry, tangy and delightful. Perhaps the only let down was the Puttu, which was too mild in flavour to make an impression.
Honestly, at this point – seconds are out of question and the dessert table beckons guiltily. There is Semiya Payasam, Ney Appam, Coconut Ice cream and Pal Ada Prathaman, slightly thick, has a hint of jaggery sweetness but is still not overdone even as the last spoonful is relished. What can one say, except – the harvest has indeed arrived!
The Onam Sadya spread will be open for lunch at the Quality Inn Sabari, T Nagar, up to August 31.
