HOSUR: A herd of about 60 elephants strayed into a village near Hosur from a nearby forest and interestingly, one of the elephants delivered a calf while other elephants guarded it. The elephants strayed into Podur village near Sulagiri town on Tuesday. When villagers tried to chase the pachyderms away by bursting crackers and beating drums, they moved into the neighbouring village of Sanmavu, on the border of Royakotta reserved forest. The elephants remained in Sanmavu village and  one of them was trumpeting continuously. The confused villagers left the herd in the night. When they returned on Wednesday morning, the villagers saw a newborn calf. The elephants were guarding the calf and did not allow villagers to come near it.The elephants returned to the forest by evening, once the calf could stand. They neither damaged any crop nor did they harm any of the villagers.  An elephant giving birth is an auspicious event and villagers in Sanamavu celebrated by making sweets at their homes.
