KOZHIKODE: In what could seem to be an irony of sorts, a patient who was being taken to the district medical college here met with an accident leading to his death on Sunday, a day the world celebrates as Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. An ambulance in which a 65-year-old patient was being brought to the district medical college met with an accident leading to his death. Choyi, hailing from Oorathu near Kuttiadi, is the deceased. The incident occurred at Velliyoor near Perambra on Sunday noon. The ambulance, which was heading towards the medical college, collided with a car coming from Pulikkal in Malappuram. According to relatives, Choyi died on the spot. Choyi’s wife Kalyani, daughter Sreeja, brother-in-laws Girishan and Pavithran, and his brother Vasu, who were in the ambulance suffered injuries. Choyi was admitted to a private hospital in Kuttiadi after serious respiratory and diabetic conditions. He was rushed to Kozhikode Medical College as directed by the hospital authorities. After confirmation of Choyi’s death at the Malabar Medical College, his body was taken to his home.Though the relatives and locals claim that the death was due to the impact of thecollision, postmortem was not conducted. When contacted, Perambra SI Sreedharan said, “the police have not registered a case as no complaints were received. Besides, there was no intimation from any hospitals to the police regarding the post mortem.” Later at night, ambulance driver Abdul Majeed gave a statement to the police that the patient had died before the accident.
