A post graduate medical student allegedly committed suicide in a hostel room of the Madurai Medical College on Panagal Road on Sunday night. Police suspect that a failed love affair led to the suicide.
B Harini (27), the daughter of Balasundaram, an officer with the Hindustan Aeronautical Limited, Bangalore, was studying final year in Master of Surgery at the Madurai Medical College. She stayed at the Oasis Medical Post Graduate Hostel of the college on Panagal Road.
On Monday morning, after Harini did not respond to their phone calls, her friends went to her hostel room to check on her. They found the door locked from inside and tried calling out to her and repeatedly knocked on the door. However, there was no response.
Later, college authorities and policemen managed to break open the door, only to find Harini dead. Police sources said Harini committed suicide by hanging from an iron grill in the room using her churidar.
Single rooms were allotted to PG students in the hostel, police said, while adding that she could have killed herself at midnight. Scars, suspected to have been made using blades, were found on her body, which was sent to the Government Rajaji Hospital for autopsy.
Police suspect that a failed love affair with a doctor could have led to Harini’s suicide. When Harini asked her lover to marry her, he allegedly refused as his family was against it.
