New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday cancelled all the programmes scheduled for the second day of his Orissa tour due to incessant rains and cut short the trip to return to Delhi.
Rains continued to play spoilsport during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's two-day tour, forcing changes in his itinerary.
Singh had been scheduled to fly by helicopter to Tusra in Bolangir district and then visit Sunabeda area of Koraput in the impoverished Korapur-Bolangir-Kalahandi(KBK) region before leaving for Visakhapatnam in the afternoon.
Reports said it was raining in Bolangir and Koraput on Tuesday morning under the influence of a low pressure area formed over the north Bay of Bengal.
It has also been raining in Bhubaneswar since Monday night.
Earlier on Tuesday, the PM was to make an ariel survey of the flood-hit region. But he had to cancel the schedule because of the rains.
He was also slated to unveil a comprehensive package for the KBK region, considered one of the poorest in the country.
In fact, heavy rains greeted the Prime Minister on his arrival on Monday morning forcing him to cancel his scheduled trip to Kaniha in Angul district where he was to dedicate the 3000 MW super thermal NTPC power station to the nation.
Singh later dedicated the plant from Bhubaneswar itself through a televised programme from the studios of Doordarshan Kendra.
Meanwhile on Monday, the PM unveiled a Rs 200-crore package for Orissa for flood relief work. He ordered an immediate release of the first installment of Central assistance.
