PUDUCHERRY: Pondicherry University will be starting M Sc in Astrophysics and Astronomy  as well as LLM Corporate Law in the current academic year.The Astrophysics and Astronomy programme will be started jointly with the Indian Institute of Astrophysics and Astronomy, Bangalore, and the Inter University Centre for Astrophysics, Pune, said Pondicherry University Vice Chancellor (V-C), JAK Tareen.  Training for the students would be provided at these national institutes, he added.There will be 60 seats for the programme, though, for the current year, there will be just 10 seats.The top 10 students in Physics would be given the option to take up the course, he said.After getting its approval from the UGC recently, LLB Corporate Law will be started with 20 seats.  Within the next 10 days, advertisements would be issued inviting applications from students and selections done through an entrance test, he added.  The university is in the process of establishing a Centre for Foreign Languages offering diploma courses in 10 different languages in the near future.  At present, the university is offering certificate courses in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, German, Russian, French, Spanish and Italian.With global demand, the employability of youths would be enhanced by this additional course along with the main subject, he said.The UGC had provided an additional grant of `50 crore under its 11th Five Year Plan. Already, construction of university buildings on an area of one million square feet had taken place and 200 faculty positions had been filled, said the Vice Chancellor.  The allocation of `230 crore under the plan period had been fully utilised, resulting in the additional allocation, he added.
