CHENNAI: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa will inaugurate two pilot projects of the Chennai city traffic police - portable signal system and e-challan - at the Anna Salai police station on Tuesday. Sources told Express that the portable traffic light control device can be used in emergency situations when the permanent signal system breaks down either due to disruption in power supply or malfunctioning. The battery-operated system can be transported from place to place and installed on a temporary basis at junctions or roads where there are no traffic signals. The objective is to solve the mounting traffic woes in the city not only caused by the increasing number of vehicles, but also by frequent breakdown of traffic signals, the sources added.Another project that will be formally inaugurated by the CM is the e-challan system that is already under implementation in some junctions in the city. The system aims at preventing instances of policemen collecting bribes. This will the first occasion where the CM will participate in a function related to the police department, which falls under the home portfolio that she holds. She will also present cash awards to police personnel for their achievement in sports at the national level.
