New Delhi consumer court has asked the postal department to pay Rs 2,500 as compensation to a man whose speed post parcel was lost.

New Delhi: New Delhi consumer court has asked the postal department to pay Rs 2,500 as compensation to a man whose speed post parcel was lost during transit.

The Delhi State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, holding the Post Master of Ashok Vihar post office in New Delhi guilty of deficiency in services, said, "In such situation, the service provider is liable to compensate the consumer as to the mental agony and harassment suffered by him in terms of consideration received by it."

The order came on an appeal, filed by the Post Master against the decision of a District Consumer Forum, which had directed him to pay Rs 5,500 as compensation including litigation expenses to one Rajesh Sharma of Gujrawalan Town, Delhi.

The Commission Bench headed by Justice J D Kapoor and Member Rumnitta Mittal, though upheld the Forum's order, scaled down the compensation amount by Rs 3,000 by saying that the consumer Forums could award compensation only for the negligence of the service provider not as to cost of lost goods.

As per the complaint, Sharma had booked a parcel under the Speed Post service for the delivery at Guwahati, which never reached its destination.
