Rae Bareli: Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said he is ready to lead the campaign for the Congress party in Uttar Pradesh. The move is expected to turn around Congress' fortunes in a state where it had declined steeply since 1989.
In Rae Bareli to spearhead the campaign for his mother and Congress President Sonia Gandhi for the May 8 by-election, Rahul also attacked the Mulayam Singh Yadav government saying it was not not properly utilising the help given by the Centre.
"I am ready to take the responsibility of (leading) the party in the state if the high command so asks. If the central leadership gives me the responsibility I can turn around the fortunes of the party in the state," Rahul said.
Alleging that developments works were being hampered in Uttar Pradesh because of the state government's attitude, Rahul said Congress would do everything possible to ensure development of the state with the help of the Centre.
The young MP said his family had a long relationship with Rae Bareli and promised special measures for its development.
He said the Opposition parties knew only to level allegations while the Congress believed in service.
On Tuesday morning, he formally launched the campaign from Rahi block for his mother, who was accompanied by former union minister Satish Sharma.
