BHUBANESWAR: Showcasing the three distinct classical music traditions of India -- Hindustani, Carnatic and Odissi -- the three-day annual Rajarani national music festival kicked off on the sprawling green lawns of the 11th century Rajarani temple complex here on Wednesday. The event features both the veterans and the promising vocalists and instrumentalists. The inaugural evening featured renowned music composer and Odissi Research Centre chief Ramahari Das and head of Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya Bijaya Kumar Jena in duet. The second performance of the evening was a scintillating show by Carnatic musician O S Arun. The second evening of the Rajarani festival would see recital by the doyen of Odissi music, eminent singer and musicologist Damodar Hota and performance by Ganesh and Kumaresh, the well-known violinists who are a part of the Carnatic music fraternity. The last concert of the festival would be an ensemble of Mardala recital by expert Dhaneswar Swain and Hindustani vocal performance by two of the most beloved and highly regarded vocalists in the country - Rajan and Sajan Mishra. “We feel happy and content when our audience are music-lovers. The listener is a much bigger critic for us as they have the ability to point our mistakes. Then we also relish performing in front of such an informed audience,” said Ramhari Das. “What appeals to me is the immense support of people here to the music community. To see musicians actually being able to render their music and share it, is so amazing and I am so glad to experience that,” said Alexandra, a tourist from Poland.
