Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat on Saturday met the Speaker of the Assembly and demanded the disqualification of nine rebel Congress MLA, with less than two days to go for a trust vote.
Rawat met Speaker Govind Singh Kunjwal and told him that several actions of the rebel MLAs after the crisis broke out on March 18, attracted provisions of the anti-defection law.
Rawat said the evidence was video footage from the Assembly which showed the nine MLAs, led by sacked minister Harak Singh Rawat and former chief minister Vijay Bahuguna, shouting slogans against the Congress and the government.
He also pointed out that they sat in the same bus with the Leader of Opposition Ajay Bhatt when he went to meet Governor KK Paul and stake claim to form the government. They also signed on the memorandum against the government submitted to the Governor by Bhatt.
Later in the evening a BJP delegation led by Kailash Vijayvargiya met the President and told the Rawat government does not have the right to stay in office.
Already, notices have been issued to the rebels following a request from party chief whip and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Indira Hridayesh seeking action against them for violating the party whip in the state Assembly during voting on the Finance Bill.
Rawat's meeting with the Speaker came hours after the Congress rebels released a 'sting video' which allegedly showed him trying to buy their support.
Rawat and his party called the video "fake" and a work of the "BJP's dirty tricks department".
