London: Veteran actress Julie Christie believes that the red carpet isn’t what it used to be, insisting that the whole tradition has turned into product placement.

The 68-year-old actress, who has been nominated for Best Actress Academy Award for the film Away From her, said that though the red carpet has always been obsessed with youth and beauty, respect for the older people and their wisdom is missing from modern day celeb events.

“Let’s be realistic, you want to see people like Johnny Depp on the red carpet, or Angelina Jolie, a young woman I admire,” the Daily Express quoted her as saying.

“There’s always been an obsession with youth and beauty. What’s missing is the equal obsession with respect for the older people and their wisdom, knowledge and courage.

“And I don’t like the way the red carpet has turned into product placement. ‘Who are you wearing? From where did you borrow your jewels?’

“I don’t know where the glamour is in admitting you’ve borrowed your jewellery or were put together by a stylist,” she added.

The actress has already won Best Actress award for Away From Her in Screen Actors Guild Award.
