New Delhi: "You come to India as a tourist, you leave as a member of the family." This is how outgoing US Ambassador Timothy Roemer described his nearly two-year stay here at a farewell reception hosted in his honour.
Showering praise on India and its culture, Roemer observed "India gets into your stomach for its great food, gets into your brain for great poetry of Rabindranath Tagore it will never leave Roemer family."
He described his tenure in India as "very very beautiful, rewarding and challenging experience for me and my family to come to this great country."
"This incredible country brings everything to you all the time, love, warmth challenges, diversity, respect, tolerance, human rights, rule of law and democracy," he said in presence host of dignitaries including ambassadors, high commissioners and diplomats.
Describing India as a true partner of the US, Roemer said he will always be working on the relationship between the two countries.
He said after his appointment President Barack Obama had told him to connect with cross section of the people including the Aam Admi so that they know America cares for India.
Quoting Obama he said "we will be right there with you shoulder to shoulder. He (Obama) believes India is not rising, India has already risen."
"We built this global partnership to work together on shared strategic interest," he said.
Roemer also thanked the diplomatic community saying he was a political appointee and he learnt so much from the diplomats in Delhi.
