New Delhi: A Class 7 student of a state-run school in south Delhi hanged herself to death after she was scolded by her teacher and then rusticated from the school for allegedly stealing Rs 130 from her friend, parents of the deceased said on Monday.
Zeenat Praveen, 16, committed suicide at her house in Sangam Vihar area around 1000 hrs IST on Friday when her brothers were in the other room and parents were outside. She was a student at the Bachan Prasad Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya in the same area.
"Before she committed suicide, she had gone to the school along with her mother after being summoned by the principal over the theft matter. There they were hauled up by the vice principal. They accused Zeenat of stealing Rs 130 from a classmate," said the deceased's father Zahid Hussain.
Distraught Hussain has donated the eyes of his only daughter.
The victim's mother alleged that her daughter was scolded badly by the vice principal and the teacher.
"They said Zeenat can not continue her studies in the school because of the theft. I requested them that she was a child and should be forgiven. But, they didn't agree. They handed me a receipt saying that she has been rusticated from the school," said her mother.
"Zeenat started sobbing, but that did not help. They asked us to leave the school," she added.
As soon as they stepped out of the school, Zeenat ran towards her house.
"I thought she was ashamed. When I entered the house, I saw her body hanging. I called up my sons who were upstairs and also called up a doctor. But my daughter was no more," the victim's mother said.
The police then sent her body to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for an autopsy.
Hussain alleged that the police were trying to downplay the incident.
The police said they were investigating the matter, but a case was yet to be registered. The school authorities could not be reached for their comments.
