New Delhi: Top seed Sania Mirza lost in the first round of the singles event at the Morocco Open to Maria Emilia Salerni of Argentina at Fes to crash out of the tournament.
Playing her first singles match after nearly two months of injury layoff, Sania was never in the match losing in straight sets 2-6, 5-7 to Salerni.
She was undoutably very upset to make an exit after the first round.
"Of course it is disappointing; it was frustrating to be there knowing what I wanted to do, but not being able to execute like before the injury. But that's what lack of match play will do. I knew I'd be quite rusty and wouldn't be anywhere close to what I wanted," Sania \was quoted as saying by PTI.
On Tuesday she had paired with American Vania King and won her first round doubles match 6-3, 5-7, 10-8 against Alla Kudryavtseva of Russia and Olga Savchuk of Ukraine.
However, there was no such result in the singles as Sania's serve was broken
early on and she lost the first set in under half an hour.
Though she fought hard in the second set even after trailing 1-5 and levelling the score at 5-5 but Salerni was up to the task and went on to win the set 7-5 to book her place in the second round.
.
With her singles hopes dashed, Sania is now looking forward to her doubles match where she and King meet Christina Horiato Poulos (Australia) and Ahsha Rolle (US) in the second round.
