THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) came out strongly in favour of the state on Friday on the Mullaperiyar issue by registering a suo moto case and asked the government to file a special leave petition in the Supreme Court and avail of an interim order to lower the water level to 120 feet.In an interim order, SHRC chairman Justice J B Koshy pointed out that if such an order is not forthcoming, the state should approach the court for an order to save the lives of  people in the two states surrounding the Mullaperiyar belt.He also suggested that a new dam should be built under the supervision of the Central Water Regulatory Authority or another Central agency. The SHRC chairman also urged the Prime Minister to intervene and settle the dispute between the two states. The Kerala Chief Minister should take the initiative for talks with Tamil Nadu andbring down the water level to 120 ft. Justice J B Koshy and members also decided to visit the dam on December 6. The SHRC chairman’s order also asked the State Government to request the empowered committee of the Supreme Court to file an interim report on the serious situation borne by recurring tremors in the Mullaperiyar region. The cost of a new dam should be met either by Kerala or shared by the Centre and Kerala and Tamil Nadu Governments. The Centre should ensure that Kerala releases water to Tamil Nadu.
