Betul: Thwarting social pressure and family opposition, a specially-abled couple got married holding their six-month-old baby in hands in a solemn function in Betul district of Madhya Pradesh.
But the road for Bhima (26) and Meena (22) – both natives of Alampur village in Chichli block - has not been easy.
They had applied for marriage under Special Marriage Act with the ADM court in Betul a year ago but it got rejected.
According to Bhima, an employee posted with the ADM office sought Rs 3,000 bribe and rejected their application after he declined to give.
However, the staff in the office refuted the allegation and claimed that the application was rejected as statements of the witnesses were problematic.
With no legal recourse, the couple opted for a live-in relationship. Six months ago, they were blessed with a baby.
Following the birth of their child, the couple felt the requirement to legalise their union.
They once again approached the district administration and this time the government machinery, busy preparing for mass marriage for the disabled, took special interest in their case and arranged their wedding.
Furthermore, their marriage also became a part of a unique record. The function saw marriages of 115 specially-abled couples and the function was entered into Golden Book of Records.
The earlier record was held by Ujjain with 101 simultaneous weddings.
