Tamil Nadu: Farmer commits suicide in Ariyalur district, opposition parties blame government

Chennai: A farmer in the Ariyalur district of Tamil Nadu committed suicide after his tractor was seized by loan recovery agents.

Alagar had taken a loan of Rs 7 lakh from a private finance firm. He had paid back Rs 5 lakh but was unable to pay the remaining instalments.

He reportedly consumed pesticide and died in the hospital as doctors tried to save his life

The death comes close on the heels of another farmer being beaten up in Thanjavur for defaulting on his loan.

Opposition parties have hit out at the Centre and state government highlighting how business tycoon Vijay Mallya is treated differently even through he owes thousands of crores to multiple banks.

CPI's D Raja said, "It is wrong that a person who takes so much of loan from our national banks is free and can escape in comfort. While on the other hand the farmers who take loans for their survival and livelihood are beaten up."

A video of the incident had gone viral following which NHRC had issued notices to the Chief Secretary and DGP, Government of Tamil Nadu, seeking reports within two weeks on the matter.
