Farmers these days are reporting that chilli yields are higher than rice or cotton. They also note that chilli cultivation requires higher investment and greater effort. If chilli is cultivated properly, the investment per acre for chilli can yield a profit of around Rs 70,000. Crop rotation helps prevent them from being affected by diseases, according to farmers. Crop rotation is the practice of growing a series of different types of crops in the same area across a sequence of growing seasons. This practice reduces the reliance of crops on one set of nutrients, pest and weed pressure. A young farmer from Telangana is cultivating cotton, rice, and chilli. He has planted each crop on one acre, making a total of three acres. Among these, the chilli crop has given the highest yield. Compared to cotton and rice, chilli has provided a profit of about Rs 70,000 per acre.
The farmer mentioned to Local 18 that he purchased chilli seeds from a fertiliser shop in Nalgonda district. The seeds were then planted in a nursery. He mentioned that water needs to be supplied to the chilli plants every two days. In case of any disease, he would visit the local agriculture officer, who would identify the disease and recommend the appropriate treatment. Such intensive care is not required for rice or cotton. For rice, the profit after investment is over Rs 15,000. Cotton requires similar care to chilli, but the profit is not as high. Cotton yields a profit of Rs 20,000 per acre after expenses.
Crop rotation also helps in achieving higher yields without falling prey to diseases. Among the three crops he cultivated, chilli gave the highest yield and profit. He advises other farmers that while chilli requires higher investment and effort, it can yield substantial income with a little patience.
