In Noida's Sector 17A last week, two thieves showed how the morning hours are the perfect time to hide in the open. They drove brazenly into the gated compound, past the security detail, in an Audi, also stolen. They then parked the car and walked in and out of several homes that had their main doors unlocked for the household helps to do their chores.
So relaxed were the thieves that they stopped inside some houses to ponder over the booty they could collect. In one, they found a laptop. In another, they found a set of car keys. It was of a BMW parked outside. The two then split, one took the BMW , the other the Audi. Both cars drove out unchallenged. There were people all around them. Every one saw, but no one noticed. Except, of course, the CCTV cameras. Footage showed the thieves cruising through the sector for nearly 20 minutes on July 15. They entered the compound at 6.59am in a black Audi A-7 through the main gate. The guards simply let the car drive in without asking the driver for his destination. Their first stop was A-11, where several luxury cars are parked on any given day. The CCTV footage clearly shows a young man dressed in black get off the Audi and enter the house, he returns within two minutes and drives away.
Thereafter, the thieves drove to A-20, where they picked up a laptop. At the next stop, A-22, they were seen taking a close look at the Fortuner parked on the road. The Audi then stopped at A-37. One of the men confidently walked into the house of Ritesh Rupramka, who was in his bedroom at the time, while his wife was in the washroom.
"The thief walked in as the main door was open and took the keys lying on the table and took my BMW which was just two months old," said Rupramka. "We were alerted when my mother returned from her walk around 8am, which is when we called the police," he said. Both vehicles can be seen exiting from two separate gates of the sector within 17 minutes of their entry.
The thieves were asked about their identity only in the first house, A-11. "One thief entered the basement of the house but before he could get access to the car keys kept in the basement, he was accosted by the domestic staff, after which he left," said Gaurav Grover, DSP, Noida.
