A special team of the district police arrested Birendra Pradhan from Goudpali in Burla here on Monday for his alleged involvement in the loot of diamonds worth Rs 80 lakh from Surat.

Earlier on Sunday, the police with the help of their counterparts in neighbouring districts, had arrested two of his accomplices, Laxman Biswal of Khairpali in Deogarh district and Duryodhan Bisi of Boudh. They were produced in a court at Angul, the same day with the Surat Police taking them on transit remand.

The police recovered 26 packets of diamonds which Biswal had left with a relative and five more packets from Bisi along with a solitaire worth Rs 7 lakh.

Reports said the trio knew a broker, Suresh Kanti Bhai Sharma of Surat and evinced interest in purchasing diamonds worth Rs  80 lakh. Later they invited him to Hotel Himalaya in Surat for the deal on July 31. They reportedly assaulted him before tying him up and fled.

Subsequently Sharma reported the matter in Mahidarpura police station at Surat and the case was handed over to Gujarat Crime Branch.

Acting on a tip off about their presence in Sambalpur region, they informed the local DIG Sanjay Kumar and SP Nikhil Kanodia. Based on the information, a team was formed  and the sleuths began working on leads till they arrested Biswal from Reamal in Deogarh and his interrogation led the police to Chhendipada in Angul district where he had hidden the 26 packets of diamonds. Bisi was picked up from his house at Boudh.
