THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: ‘’Youngsters must work hard to attain knowledge in this competing world. The Gurukula system that prevailed in ancient India is the best system to gain knowledge and our universities must be elevated to this status,” said retired Principal of SST College of Music, Kumarakerala Varma, while inaugurating the three-day national seminar organised by the Department of Music, Government College for Women on Wednesday. The seminar on ‘Manodharma sangeetha and modern techniques in music’ enlightened students on the different areas of ‘Manodharma sangeetha’ like ‘raga alapana’, ‘niraval’ and ‘kalpana svara pallavi’. The seminar also introduced modern techniques which would help use and care of vocal chords. Lectures were presented by Jayalakshmi, retired Head of the Department of Music at Maharaja’s College, K Preeti, assistant professor, Department of Music, SSUS Kalady; Seetha Narayanan, ‘A’ top artist, AIR; and Sreelekha Panicker M S, associate professor in Music, Maharaja’s College. Principal Sushama presided over the function. R Sreelekha, associate professor in music at NSS College for Women, Karamana; M Sankara Sarma, Senate Member, University of Kerala; and Suma, associate professor in Hindi, also attended the function.
