Police have begun investigations after a gang with deadly weapons barged into the house of a village panchayat president in the middle of the night and threatened to murder her, at Selaiyur police limits on Sunday.
Police said a gang broke open the rear door on the ground floor of the three-storey house at Mambakkam Main Road, belonging to Madurapakkam Panchayat president Amudha Velmurugan of DMK around 1 am on Sunday. They then walked up to the first floor where Amudha and her family members were sleeping and tapped on the bedroom door asking her to come out.
They allegedly threatened to murder the woman and her family members, police said. Meanwhile, Velmurugan, who was also inside the room along with Amudha called the police control number and some of his friends. A little later, the gang, noticing the arrival of the police, escaped through the broken door into the Madurapakkam reserve forest.
Following a complaint, police have registered a case under IPC sections 147 (Punishment for rioting), 148 (Rioting armed with deadly weapon), 448 (Punishment for house-trespass), 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation) and 511 (Punishment for attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life or other imprisonment).
Police sources said Amudha had been elected the president of the panchayat consecutively for the second time in one of the 15 villages under the St Thomas Mount Village Panchayat union.
