Protests condemning the Centre’s move to provide training to Sri Lankan defence personnel at training facilities in the State continued for the third consecutive day in the city on Monday.
The protestors targeted Central government offices to put pressure on the Union government to stop training the Sri Lankans and send them back immediately. Defying the security guards, 14 law college students stormed into the Income Tax office complex located on Race Course Road around 1 pm and besieged a deputy commissioner’s office. The gates of the Income Tax Office were locked for a few minutes before the police could arrive in the scene and remove the students. Police said all the 14 students were detained for unlawful assembly and were released later in the evening.
Similarly, seven members of the Kongunadu Arunthathiyar Munnetra Peravai were arrested when they tried to besiege the Central Telegraph Office.
“Even the state government has demanded that the Sri Lankans be sent back. The Central government must listen to the feelings of the Tamil people,” said general secretary of the organisation, Elangovan.
Two Sri Lankan defence personnel - Major Dissanayaka Mohottalalage Vengra and Captain Hewawasam Kadaudage - were undergoing 11 months training at the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington since May 19.
However, this came to light only on Saturday igniting a series of protests following it.
