BANGALORE: The University Grants Commission has awarded the post-graduate Indira Gandhi Scholarship for single girl child, for the academic year 2010-2012, to 2,299 students. The UGC has introduced this scheme to compensate direct costs of girl child education at all levels, especially for the only girl child in family.“It is observed that the number of girls as against boys in certain states is declining, which is a matter of great concern. Many women are even forced to give birth to a male child. In such circumstances, education of women needs to be utilised properly and effective means for their empowerment and education will prepare them to gain more control over their lives. The mindset against the girl child hasn’t helped us keep pace with economic progress and literacy,” says a statement from the UGC.The objectives of the scheme are to support PG education for the single girl child in non-professional courses and to recognise the value of observance of small family norm. The main eligibility criterion for the scholarship is that the candidate should be a single girl child.“In a family with one son and one daughter, the girl will not be considered for the scholarship. The scheme is applicable to a single girl child who has secured admission in a regular, fulltime masters degree course in any recognised university or a PG college. This scholarship is available to the student for first PG degree only,” UGC stated.
