UP cleric fatwa illegal, says seminary
The Muslim cleric claimed 'defaulters' would have to take special vows to solemnise their marriages again.

Muzaffarnagar: Two days after a Muslim cleric sparked a controversy with a fatwa that said all persons who had joined funeral prayers led by his rival had become 'kafirs', the Darululoom Waqf Deoband seminary on Tuesday said his ruling was illegal and not maintainable.

"Muslims should not follow the fatwa (issued by Mufti Abdulmannan Kalimi of Bareily) as it is not based on Shariat law and is against all thoughts (of Islam) including Barelvi," said deputy in-charge of the fatwa department of Darululoom Waqf Deoband, Mufti Ahsan Kasmi.

Kalimi had issued the fatwa on Sunday, saying all persons who participated in a 'namaz-e-janaza' led by his rival Abdul Hamid on August 11 had become 'kafirs' (non-believers) and their marriages had lost sanctity.

They would have to take special vows to return to Islam and solemnise their marriages again, he had claimed.

Several clerics had reacted sharply to Kalimi's fatwa, saying it had brought shame to the Muslim community. Kalimi and Hamid are both Sunni Muslim clerics but belong to rival sects.

What's your reaction?
