Hamirpur: An irate mob protesting the alleged custodial death of a person in Hamirpur turned violent on Saturday with people laying siege of the police station and resorting to brick-bating and arson.

Police had to use tear gas shells to control the mob, which had gheraoed the police station, to bring the situation under control.

The mob was protesting against death of one Baddal Khan, who was allegedly murdered in Muskara police station by one Rashid, after both were brought there for investigation into a case.

Khan's family had alleged Station Officer Jagdev Yadav had been keeping Khan and Rashid in the police station for the past two days over a minor family dispute, and in the wee hours today, Rashid attacked Baddal with a heavy jet pump, killing him on the spot.

The family also alleged that the body of the victim was hurriedly rushed for postmortem without any intimation been given to them.

Meanwhile, District Magistrate B Chandrakala, who rushed to the spot after violence, assured the mob of action against the SO and three constables allegedly involved and also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 1.40 lakh for the bereaved family.
