The Kibithu Bakery, located in the easternmost part of India, is set to undergo significant upgrades. Soon, it will feature café-like amenities for tourists, including UPI payments, enhanced seating, and exquisite furniture and decor.
Established by the Indian Army in 2022, the bakery, situated in Arunachal Pradesh’s Anjaw district, is currently managed by four women who oversee food production and sales.
“We have noticed a significant increase in the number of tourists visiting our village since 2022. As a result, our shop has been receiving a decent number of people on a daily basis. Recently, we were informed by Army officers that they will be upgrading our shop, and we will soon have the UPI facility available as well,” said Shanti Rai, one of the staff members at Kibithu Bakery.
Under the Vibrant Villages Programme (VVP), Kibithu received new roads, a medical facility, a sports complex, and a mobile tower. The village has a population of around 150 people and awaits 3G/4G connectivity in the coming few months. Once the internet is available, the village situated along the India-China border has the potential to become a popular tourist destination.
According to sources, the bakery is set to undergo a makeover into a café, with an estimated cost ranging from Rs 30 to 35 lakh.
“Internet connectivity has been an issue in the village, but fortunately, a tower has been installed to address this problem. The highway is also nearing completion, and by June or July, both the highway and connectivity should be fully operational. Indian Army is also working on adding more facilities for visitors by that time,” adds Shanti.
The women working at the bakery, which is a symbol of women empowerment in ‘India’s first village’, receive decent salaries from the sales they generate. They also plan to expand their offerings in the future to meet demand, currently featuring cupcakes, naan khatai, coconut cookies, butter cookies and more.
