SNDP Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan has said that it is unbecoming of a political leader like E T Mohammed Basheer to seek a ban on toddy, with a hidden objective of targeting a particular community.
Addressing the media during his visit to Aranmula in connection with the vallasadya offering at Aranmula Lord Parthasarathi temple on Tuesday, he said that Basheer’s plea to ban toddy sounded like the tone of a fundamentalist leader.
“Over one lakh people belonging to a particular community are depending on the sector for their livelihood. The grounds for seeking a ban on the production and sale of toddy is a clear instance of the failure of the government in preventing fake products,” he said.
Vellappally expressed his surprise over the failure the IUML leader to seek a ban on foreign liquor as well.
Majority community hit
Vellappally Natesan said that the members of the unorganised majority community are the worst hit owing to the clout of the organised minority communities. A fair distribution of governance is denied to the members of the majority community, he said.
“The political strength enjoyed by the organised communities even deny the legitimate opportunities for the members of the majority community,” he said.
