The district administration has carried out a mass cleaning drive to remove garbage and plastic wastes dumped by various departments on the Collectorate premises.
The district administration took up the cleaning drive following a news report ‘Visitors Suffer as Collectorate Stinks’, published in this newspaper, highlighting the serious health hazards owing to heaps of garbage and plastic waste dumped behind the ‘A’ and ‘B’ blocks of the Collectorate. The report also highlighted that the backyard of the two blocks had been turned into an open urinal as several government employees and visitors used the area to answer the call of nature.
Sources in the district administration said the collector directed the administration of the Vellore Corporation to clear the garbage immediately and continue to do so regularly. Following this, a team of 15 women sanitary workers pressed into action on Saturday to clear the garbage.
“Seven lorry loads of garbage and plastic waste have been cleared from the campus,” said a senior official in the Collectorate.
The collector has directed his subordinates to ensure that garbage is removed from the campus on a daily basis, he further said.
“The collector has also directed that a circular be sent to all departments on the premises insisting that staff use the toilets and avoid urinating behind the buildings,” said the official.
Though the district administration took efforts to clear the garbage to keep its campus clean, the stray dog and monkey menaces still continue. “Stray dogs and a few monkeys are still wandering inside the Collectorate,” said an official.
